DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science Leading to B.Sc in Nautical Science)


Course Description

The above program is duly approved by Director General of Shipping, Government of India. The course is designed as per the guidelines laid down by the Directorate. This training provides a school (X+II) (‘A’ Level) leaver a sure path to become a qualified Deck Officer.

The candidate undergoes a 12 months (two semesters) residential pre-sea training at Institute where apart from the academics he will undergo practical training in seamanship. There he will also be introduced to various aspects in workshop comprising of Carpentry, Plumbing, Machine Shop, Electrical shop and Hot-work.

The candidate also goes for Mandatory STCW course as required for seafarers. On successful completion of the semester 1 & 2 of Diploma in Nautical Science, the candidate is being awarded by Indian Maritime University (IMU).

On completion of the pre-sea training he undertake the sea phase comprising of 18 months comprising semester 3, 4 & 5 of on board ship residential training along with correspondence course with Indian Maritime University (IMU). On successful completion of Phase 2 (semester 3, 4 & 5) IMU will award the trainee with Advance Diploma in Nautical Science.

After obtaining Advance Diploma in Nautical Science, Trainee is required to undergo 4 months post-sea training in any training institute (2 Mate Function). On successful completion of the training & passing the exam he will be awarded Certificate of Competency by Director General of Shipping and B.Sc. Degree in (Nautical Science) by IMU.

Educational Qualification –

  • SSC/HSC/10+2/Class 12th from a recognized Board/ University with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM), with not less than 60% marks in PCM.

B.Sc. in Nautical Science


Course Description

This course is comprised of six semesters. The B.Sc (Nautical Science) degree will be awarded by the University on the successful completion of Three years duration. After 3 years, the cadets will be joining as the Trainee Cadet Officers on board a ship. They will have to obtain 12 months sea experience.

On completion of 12 months sea experience, they will be promoted directly as SECOND OFFICER without any further examinations. With further sea service & exams, they can be promoted as a Chief Officer and then in turn as a Captain of the ship.

B. Tech in Marine Engineering


Course Description

This 4-year Marine Engineering Degree course is approved by AICTE and duly recognized and approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. After successful completion of the course a Degree is awarded for B. Tech in Marine Engineering.

Consequent to obtaining the degree and on completion of the mandatory short courses a candidate becomes eligible to take up a career at sea as a junior / trainee engineer.

A minimum of 6 months of sea service is then required to be put in on board merchant vessels on completion of which the cadet becomes eligible to write Class IV Part ‘B’ examination (Class IV Part ‘A’ examination, being exempted on the strength of the Degree awarded). Thereafter a Class IV Certificate of Competency is awarded by the Mercantile Marine Department, Government of India. Subsequently, they become fully fledged Engineer officers of Merchant Marine and are free to take up lucrative careers within the Shipping industry world-wide.

Experienced Marine Engineers are in great demand in all industries because of their ability to handle very large power plants, their resourcefulness, sense of responsibility and ability to work with their own hand with almost no external assistance. A Marine Engineer is a very valuable and responsible member of a ship’s team.

He has to operate and controls are engineering systems onboard his ship, and maintain them in good working condition. This gives him tremendous experience and confidence. However, it must be understood that the life of a Marine Engineer is tough and not suited for the weak hearted. The ship’s engine room having the Main Engine, Boilers, Pumps, Hydraulic fuel systems, ship electrical generating plant and distribution.
